Strolling of the Heifers Parade: Brattleboro, Vermont Festivals and Road Trips

Brattleboro, Vermont is home to the "Strolling of the Heifers," an annual event that's been part of vermont for more than a decade. It's a weekend attraction that's always rated one of Vermont's Top 10 Summer Events. The weekend festival itself takes place June 7-9, 2013 and is highlighted by the world-famous "Strolling of the Heifers" Parade, which takes place Saturday, June 8 at 10 a.m. sharp on Brattleboro’s historic Main Street.

Inspired by Spain's "Running of the Bulls," throngs of people watch as heifer calves are paraded down the street and followed by many other farm animals, bands, tractors, floats, clowns and much more. When it’s over, the crowd moves to the all-day, 11-acre Slow Living Expo for food, music, dance, demonstrations, exhibits and fun.

Other activities include a bike tour, Sunday brunch, Brattleboro art gallery walk and plenty of other things to stimulate your mind.

Why is it called "The Strolling of the Heifers" and what's the point? This movement began in 2001 through the work of local farmer orly Munzing. "As a way of honoring and supporting local farmers, she envisioned a slower, friendlier, female version of the Running of the Bulls — the Strolling of the Heifers. Farmers would bring their heifer calves, lead them up the historic Main Street of nearby Brattleboro, and afterward, there would be a festival where people could meet the farmers and learn about local foods."

The Stroll is not just a parade — it’s a movement. They work year-round to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation at farm and food businesses, to connect people and organizations of many kinds around sustainable living and resilient communities, and to promote the value of local food systems, local thinking and Slow Living.
