It's a weekend attraction that's always rated one of Vermont's Top 10 Summer Events. The weekend festival itself takes place June 7-9, 2013 and is highlighted by the world-famous "Strolling of the Heifers" Parade, which takes place Saturday, June 8 at 10 a.m. sharp on Brattleboro’s historic Main Street.

www.strollingoftheheifers.com/

Inspired by Spain's "Running of the Bulls," throngs of people watch as heifer calves are paraded down the street and followed by many other farm animals, bands, tractors, floats, clowns and much more. When it’s over, the crowd moves to the all-day, 11-acre Slow Living Expo for food, music, dance, demonstrations, exhibits and fun.

Search for a Vermont Vacation Cottage or B&B Rental

Other activities include a bike tour, Sunday brunch, Brattleboro art gallery walk and plenty of other things to stimulate your mind.

Why is it called "The Strolling of the Heifers" and what's the point? This movement began in 2001 through the work of local farmer orly Munzing. "As a way of honoring and supporting local farmers, she envisioned a slower, friendlier, female version of the Running of the Bulls — the Strolling of the Heifers. Farmers would bring their heifer calves, lead them up the historic Main Street of nearby Brattleboro, and afterward, there would be a festival where people could meet the farmers and learn about local foods."

The Stroll is not just a parade — it’s a movement. They work year-round to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation at farm and food businesses, to connect people and organizations of many kinds around sustainable living and resilient communities, and to promote the value of local food systems, local thinking and Slow Living.

Ask any native Vermonter and they'll tell you that one of the special treats that any visitor to our state must indulge in is our world famous ice cider. This sweet wine is made from apples and uses natural cold weather to concentrate sugar, and thus the flavor, before fermentation.

First developed in southern Quebec, the tradition of making this fine, sophisticated, artisan wine has migrated over the centuries and established itself as part of Vermont culture.

According to the Vermont Ice Cider Association, our delicious wine MUST contain:

100% Vermont apples

No added sugar, color or flavoring

Pre-fermentation sugar content of not less than 30° Brix achieved solely by natural cold concentration

Finished residual sugar content of not less than 130 g per litre

Alcoholic strength of between 7% and 13% by volume

Both newbies and connoisseurs alike can enjoy the sophisticated taste of Vermont ice cider at the Vermont Ice Wine Festival on February 23, 2013 at Jay Peak Resort. The event will include not only wine tasting, but sampling of Vermont artisan cheeses and other specialty foods. Ice cider and winemakers from all over Vermont will be on hand to provide information on their technique for producing world-class ice wine. Admission cost is $30.

Our friends from Boyden Valley Winery and Lincoln Peak Vineyards will both be in attendance at the festival.
As ice fishing season gets under way in Vermont on January 19, 2013 both veteran anglers and newbies will flock to lakes across the state for days or weeks of solitary or family fun.

Our friends at the Vermont Department of Tourism, along with Vermont Life magazine, were nice enough to put together a few tips on how to make a Vermont ice fishing vacation both pleasurable and safe.

Great Locations

Lake Bomoseen, near Rutland, along with Harriman Reservoir in southern Vermont are considered great spots to haul in a bounty of fish from beneath the ice. In the northwest, check out the Champlain Islands where the small bays are known to freeze early and fish like smelt, pike, and perch exist in abundance. Those venturing to the Northeast Kingdom will appreciate the excellent fishing available at Lake Willoughby, where giant lake trout are waiting to bite into your bait.

What You Need

A sled to pull gear and stoves.

Buckets for your fish and sitting

Don't forget those disposable warming packs!

Shanty rentals and guided trips are available near most significant fishing spots. Check out the Vermont Outdoor Guide Association: www.voga.org

A great place to warm up and sleep! Find a cottage or cabin at DiscoverVermontVacations.com

A License

Licenses are available at local Vermont agencies and online from the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department: http://www.vtfishandwildlife.com/buylicense.cfm

Safety

The ice should be at least 6 inches thick in order to fish. Never venture onto unknown ice alone and never drive any vehicle onto ANY ice.

The Catamount Trail Association (CTA) helps skiers enjoy and traverse the more than 300 mile-long trail that snakes through Vermont from top to bottom. Skiers and snowshoers take to the trail, some just for a day or weekend, while others accept the 300 mile challenge through farms, villages, the Green Mountain National Forest, tourist centers, and private land.

The Catamount Trail is characterized by great diversity – both in terms of the difficulty of the route and the remoteness of the various sections. There is something for everyone, regardless of your ability level and the time available. However, while you may be sufficiently skilled and equipped for one section, you may not necessarily be so for other sections.

The Catamount Trail Association

The CTA has recently released the new CT Map, an interactive app that profiles the 31 sections from the Massachusetts border to the Qubec border. It includes maps, trail descriptions and elevation profiles all along the trail. You can also pinpoint your exact location, measure distances between points, and scour for nearby amenities like food and lodging.

CT Map App on iTunes

The app is currently available for download on itunes for $4.99. It's compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 5.0 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.

Manchester, VT History

The town was one of several chartered in 1761 by Benning Wentworth, colonial governor of New Hampshire. It was his custom to name new towns after prominent English aristocrats of the day, hoping they might adopt a patronly interest in their namesakes. Wentworth named Manchester for Robert Montagu, 3rd Duke of Manchester. First settled in 1764, the town was laid out in 1784. The land was better suited for grazing than tillage, so by 1839 about 6000 sheep roamed the pasturage and hillsides.

Other industries came to include iron mines, marble quarries and mills, and lumber companies. The arrival of the railroad from industrialized centers like New York City brought tourists, drawn by Manchester's historic architecture and beautiful setting among mountains. Following the Civil War, the town developed into an affluent resort area, which it remains today.

In springtime wildflowers grow in profusion, making our roadsides, meadows and woodlands a welcoming garden. Nearby mountains, forests and lakes invite you to pack a picnic, enjoy swimming holes, hike the trails or camp under a sea of stars.

Today, Middlebury serves as the commercial and business center for the region. Downtown hosts a three-screen movie theater, the post office, and two historic inns, as well as many shops and restaurants. Of note is Middlebury's A&W; Vermont's only remaining car-hop restaurant and a popular spot with both locals and Middlebury College students.

Middlebury is home to both Middlebury College and the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History.

Middlebury, VT History

One of the New Hampshire grants, Middlebury was chartered by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth on November 2, 1761. The name Middlebury came from its location in the middle of Salisbury and New Haven. It was awarded to John Evarts and 62 others. The French and Indian Wars ended in 1763, and the first settlers arrived in 1766. John Chipman cleared his lot seven, it was the first clearing.

During the Revolutionary War, much of the town was burned in Carleton's Raid on November 6, 1778. After the war concluded in 1783, settlers returned to rebuild homes, clear forests and establish farms. Principal crops were grains and hay.

Landowners vied for the lucrative honor of having the village center grow on their properties. A survey dispute with Salisbury led to the forfeiture of Gamaliel Painter's farm to that town, and his transition from farming to developing Middlebury Village near his and Abisha Washburn's mill, together with other mills that surrounded the Otter Creek falls. Industries would include a cotton factory, sawmill, gristmill, pail factory, paper mill, woolen factory, iron foundry, and marble quarry.

The Rutland & Burlington Railroad first arrived on September 1, 1849. Around 1830, Middlebury was the second largest town in Vermont state.

Middlebury College, one of the United State's elite liberal arts colleges, was founded here in 1800. It is a member of the NESCAC and the so-called Little Ivy league. In the summer, the town plays host to the annual Middlebury College language schools, as well as the college's Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, the oldest surviving conference of its kind in the nation.

Middlebury is bisected by Otter Creek with the falls at the center of the Middlebury village. Foothills of the Green Mountains border the town to the east, with the Champlain Valley to the west.

Interesting Middlebury, VT Facts

There are over 400 acres of swamps, marshes, and rich woods associated with the pond.
Over 30 years in the making, the natural area at Shelburne Pond is one of the oldest and longest-running protection projects of the Vermont chapter and a successful collaboration between the Conservancy and UVM.

Size: 1,046 acres, UVM and Conservancy owned

Shelburne, VT History

The charter stated that Shelburne should consist of a six-mile square, covering 23,500 acres. However, the already-established boundaries of Burlington to the north and Charlotte to south precluded such an orderly arrangement, and so Shelburne took on the angular shape still seen today. Currently, the Town of Shelburne comprises 22.3 square miles.

Early settlers were required to perform several duties in exchange for their lots of 200-300 acres, such as cultivating a certain minimum number of acres and reserving all worthwhile pine trees for use by the Royal Navy as masts. The first settlers actually arrived in 1768, and began cutting lumber for shipment to Canada.

During the American Revolution, northern Vermont was a restless frontier, uncomfortably close to British Canada, and most settlers fled south for the duration of the war, eventually returning to begin clearing land and building a real town.

With the clearing of land and burning of logs the town experienced a potash boom. A carding and fulling mill, a gristmill, a sawmill, and a blacksmith shop were erected on the LaPlatte River at Shelburne Falls. In 1811, a few Merino sheep imported from Spain led to an upsurge in sheep raising.

Orchards and fruit growing became a major source of income for the farmers, with some 17,740 trees in 1880. Following the War of 1812, commerce on the lake expanded rapidly.
The Lake Champlain Transportation Company established its shipyard at Shelburne Harbor and launched its first steamboat, the General Green in 1825, to be followed by ten others before the Ticonderoga in 1906. In 1955, the Ticonderoga was moved overland to the Shelburne Museum where it is now on display.

Springfield, VT History

One of the New Hampshire grants, the township was chartered on August 20, 1761 by Governor Benning Wentworth and awarded to Gideon Lyman and 61 others. Although Springfield's alluvial flats made it among the best agricultural towns in the state, the Black River falls, which drop 110 feet in 1/8 of a mile, helped it develop into a mill town.

Springfield was located in the center of the Precision Valley region, home of the Vermont machine tool industry.

In 1888, the Jones and Lamson Machine Tool Company (J&L) moved to Springfield from Windsor, Vermont under the successful leadership of James Hartness. Gaining international renown for precision and innovation, J&L ushered in a new era of precision manufacturing in the area. Edwin R. Fellows co-founded the Fellows Gear Shaper Company here in 1896. As knowledge and infrastructure grew to support precision machining, other companies such as the Bryant Chucking Grinder Company and Lovejoy Tool formed, grew, and provided much of the economic engine. Springfield Telescope Makers, the oldest amateur telescope makers' club in the United States, has been headquartered in Springfield since its inception in 1920. The club's clubhouse, Stellafane, has hosted a convention for the geographically scattered club since 1927.

During World War II, Springfield's production of machine tools was of such importance to the American war effort that the US government ranked Springfield (together with the Cone at Windsor) as the seventh most important bombing target in the country.

Springfield is also home to the Eureka Schoolhouse, the oldest one-room school in the state of Vermont. Completed in 1790, the building was in continuous use until 1900 and was restored in 1968 by the Vermont Board of Historic Sites. The school house was named by its first teacher, David Searle, who, after a long journey through the new frontier was heard to cry "Eureka!" upon reaching the new settlement of Springfield. The name stuck, and "Eureka" can still be found in street and business names throughout Springfield.

Several sites in Springfield, including the historic downtown area, have been designated as having historical significance according to the National Register of Historic Places. Among them are the Hartness House (original home of the entrepreneur and governor) and the Gould's Mill Bridge, a steel truss bridge.
On July 10, 2007, Springfield was selected to host the premiere of The Simpsons Movie, which, like the Simpsons TV show, is set in a city called Springfield. In a Fox competition, Vermont was chosen to host the opening over 13 other places around the nation called Springfield.

Woodstock, VT History

Chartered by New Hampshire Governor Benning Wentworth on July 10, 1761, the town was a New Hampshire grant to David Page and 61 others. It was named after Woodstock in Oxfordshire, England, as an homage to both Blenheim Palace and its owner, George Spencer, 4th Duke of Marlborough. The town was first settled in 1768 by James Sanderson and his family. In 1776, Major Joab Hoisington built a gristmill, followed by a sawmill, on the south branch of the Ottauquechee River.

Although the Revolution slowed settlement, Woodstock developed rapidly once the war ended in 1783. The Vermont General Assembly met here in 1807 before moving the next year to the new capital at Montpelier. Falls in the Ottauquechee River provided water power to operate mills. Factories made scythes and axes, carding machines, woolens and flour. There was a machine shop and gunsmith shop. Manufacturers also produced furniture, wooden ware, sashes and blinds, carriages, harness, saddles, trunks and leather. By 1859, the population was 3,041. The Woodstock Railroad opened to White River Junction on September 29, 1875, carrying freight and tourists. The Woodstock Inn opened in 1892.

The Industrial Revolution helped the town grow prosperous, which it remains, although the economy is now largely driven by tourism. The town's central square, called the Green, is bordered by restored late Georgian, Federal Style, and Greek Revival houses. The seasonal presence of wealthy second-home owners from cities such as Boston and New York has contributed to the town's economic vitality and livelihood.

The mountain is very steep, and its trails traverse a Vermont state forest. The name "Ascutney" comes from the Abenaki word Ascutegnik, which was the name of a settlement near where the Sugar River meets the Connecticut River. The Abenaki name for the mountain is Cas-Cad-Nac, which means "mountain of the rocky summit". Mt. Ascutney itself can be viewed from Mt. Washington, seventy miles away.

Viewing the Mountain

Vermont Route 131 follows the south face of the mountain, and provides some good views of Ascutney. Similarly, Vermont Routes 44 and 44-A follow the north face, and provide a number of views of that side of the mountain. The north-south route of Interstate 91 runs just east of the mountain and provides extensive views of both the north and south faces. New Hampshire Routes 12 and 12-A provide good views of the east face. Viewing of the west face is difficult, due to the presence, immediately to the west, of Little Ascutney Mountain.

At longer distance, the mountain is visible from many locations quite a few miles away, particularly hilltops and other mountains. Ascutney can be viewed from select locations on the Dartmouth College campus, among them the upper floors of Rauner Library and the Steele Chemistry Building.

Hang Glide Vermont

Mount Ascutney, is a 3144 foot mountain with unique granite outcrops, one of which, near its peak, serves as a launching point for hang-gliders. Mount Ascutney is the premiere hang gliding site in New England, notable for its excellent soaring and cross country potential. It is not unusual for hang gliders to fly from Mt. Ascutney to the New Hampshire or Massachusetts coastline, a flight of over 90 miles. The record cross country flight from Mt. Ascutney is held by Curt Warren who flew 131.6 mi into Connecticut on August 7, 2002.

Ascutney, VT FAQ's

Actor Charles Bronson owned a farm near the mountain, and his remains were buried at the foot of the mountain after his 2003 death.
Mt. Ascutney Wildlife

Wild turkeys, deer, porcupines, and a wide variety of birds are commonly seen on Mt. Ascutney. The mountain is a favorite area for viewing migrating birds, which use the Connecticut River as a navigation pathway. More rarely seen wildlife includes moose, black bears, bobcats and fishers.

Ascutney Hiking

The mountain features four principal hiking trails, three of which are named for the town from which that trail originates.

The Wethersfield Trail — the one trail on the south face of the mountain, the base of this trail is located in a parking lot at the end of Cascade Falls Rd, off of Vermont Route 131 in Wethersfield. Highlights of this trail include Cascade Falls, the largest waterfall on the mountain, and the mountain's one launch platform for hang gliders.

The Windsor Trail — this trail originates from a small parking area off Vermont Route 44-A just east of the junction with Vermont Route 44. About 1/3 of the way up, the trail comes to a small waterfall, approximately 2/3 of the way up the trail comes to a small log lean-to shelter. Near the top, it merges with the Brownsville Trail.

The Brownsville Trail — This trail begins at a parking area along Vermont Route 44, a little over a mile west of junction with Vermont Route 44-A. The lower end of the trail follows an abandoned logging road for some distance — the road terminating at the location of an old granite quarry. The trail offers many good viewing opportunities to the north and west.

The Futures Trail — This train begins in the campground at Mt. Ascutney State Park on Route 44A, one mile west of the junction with U.S. Route 5 in Ascutney.

This is the longest trail on Mt. Ascutney — 4.6 miles, covering a wide variety of forest and geography before it connects to the Windsor Trail near the summit. Highlights of this trail include Bare Rock Vista (1.0 mile) and the Steam Donkey

— a steam powered machine used for cable logging in the early 1900s (3.5 miles). This trail can also be accessed at two points along the State Park Mountain Road for a shorter hike to summit.

At the top, a relatively level trail follows the ridge line and crosses the summit. The top of the mountain is well below the tree line and is therefore covered in forest, however a number of rocky cliffs allow good viewing, and there is an observation tower, as well. There are also two large communications towers.
The summit can also be reached via a short trail from the parking lot at the end of the only road up the mountain, the Mt. Ascutney State Park Mountain Road.

Ski Mt. Ascutney and the Ascutney Mountain Resort

Mt. Ascutney was home to the Ascutney Mountain Resort, which was a ski resort located on the mountain's northwest face, in the village of Brownsville. Opening after the end of World War II, skiing facilities originally consisted of just one rope tow. Prior to its most recent closure in the fall of 2010, the resort boasted several chairlifts, including one high-speed detachable quad, as well as a hotel, condominiums and a large base lodge. The resort's trails accommodated the entire family, but expert and intermediate skiers found themselves most at home at the resort, whose trails averaged from medium grade to steep, and were often icy from the mountain's often harsh winds.

Mount Ascutney State Park

Mount Ascutney State Park, a campground run by the state of Vermont, provides non-primitive RV or tent camping during the summer months. The park entrance is located along Vermont Route 44-A. The road into the park, which is also the one road up the mountain, begins climbing almost immediately. The road continues to climb, rising over 2000 feet in less than 4 miles, eventually arriving at a parking lot about a 1/2 mile walk from the summit. The park is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Other acts with ties to the city include Strangefolk, The Essex Green, RAQ, James Kochalka, The Jazz Mandolin Project, Pork Tornado, Anais Mitchell, Greg Davis, Koushik, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Dispatch, Prydein, Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello, Morgan Page and KT Tunstall.

Burlington Vermont Statistics

Burlington is the largest city in the U.S. state of Vermont and the shire town of Chittenden County. Burlington lies 45 miles south of the U.S.-Canadian border and some 94 miles south of Montreal.

Burlington, VT History

In a skirmish on August 2, 1813, the British shelled Burlington. This has either been cited as a bold stroke by the British with an ineffectual response from the Americans, or a weak sally by the British, properly ignored by the Americans, depending on who related the story. The cannonade lasted for about ten minutes and did not affect the outcome of the war. The American side was commanded by Naval Lieutenant Thomas MacDonough, later hero of the Battle of Lake Champlain.

The town's position on Lake Champlain helped it develop into a port of entry and center for trade, particularly after completion of the Champlain Canal in 1823, the Erie Canal in 1825, and the Chambly Canal in 1843. Wharves allowed steamboats to connect freight and passengers with the Rutland & Burlington Railroad and Vermont Central Railroad. Burlington became a bustling lumbering and manufacturing center, and incorporated as a city in 1865. Its Victorian era prosperity left behind much fine architecture, including buildings by Ammi B. Young, H. H. Richardson and McKim, Mead & White.

The ice cream enterprise Ben & Jerry's was founded here in 1978 in a renovated gas station.

Current U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders was the Socialist mayor of Burlington from 1981 to 1989.

In 2007, the city was named one of the top four "places to watch" in the United States by the AARP. Ratings were based on what was perceived as ideal for older residents. Criteria included what makes a community livable: new urbanism, smart growth, mixed-use development, and easy-living standards.
The city was a filming location for Me, Myself & Irene (2000) and What Lies Beneath (2000).

Lake Champlain Islands:

The Lake Champlain Islands have more shoreline and islands than any other part of Vermont. Here a traveler may come upon breathtaking views at any bend in the road. Located between two great cities, Montreal, Quebec and Burlington, Vermont. Enjoy your Champlain Island Vacation while exploring the island's small towns and stunning scenery, offering quiet rural charm.

Located on what Vermonters commonly refer to as "Vermont's West Coast". The Lake Champlain Islands are part of a land chain which includes the Alburg Peninsula and the islands are easily accessible by car, boat or by one of the Lake Champlain Ferries.

The State Parks, located on the islands, are second to none! One, is home to the largest natural sand beach in Vermont. Two of the parks are on their own islands, which, of course, are only accessible by boat. In short, for any type of water-sport, including year-round fishing, it doesn't get any better than here on the islands. However, many come just to visit the summer home of the famous Royal Lipizzan Stallions in North Hero, or St. Anne's Shrine on the Isle La Motte.

Lake Champlain Islands & History: ...as authored by James Millard

Lake Champlain Islands - A History Tour

"...the view over sparkling Champlain water to the carved grandeur of the Adirondacks is an awe-inspiring one. Wall on wall the mountain barriers are massed high against the western skyline, shutting in the gleaming stretch of the inland sea that Champlain discovered for the Old World, but which long before that time knew that glide of birch canoes and the thrust of Indian paddles...."*

Alburgh, Vermont

Not really an island, Alburgh is actually a peninsula reaching south into the lake from Quebec. Also known as Pointe Algonquin and Point of the Tongue, here is located Windmill Point, where on September 3, 1776 Benedict Arnold anchored his fleet prior to the Battle of Lake Champlain.

There was a significant skirmish here with Indians allied with the British. On September 6, a landing party dispatched from the American fleet was attacked by the Indians. After a furious fight on shore, the Americans managed to flee back to their boat (the gondola Boston ) and cast off- but not before three were killed and six wounded. As the survivors furiously rowed back to the ships, a few well placed cannonballs sent the natives scurrying back into the woods.

It was off Windmill Point that the radeau Thunderer sank in 1777 while carrying sick and wounded from the Battle of Saratoga.

Reportedly the British kept a gunboat stationed at the Point from 1783-1796.

Isle La Motte, Vermont

The first European to see this large island was Samuel de Champlain. He set foot on the island in 1609. Here in 1666, French soldiers under Captain Sieur de La Motte of the famed Carignan regiment, built Fort Ste. Anne. This outpost was to become the site of Vermont's first white settlement. The fortress itself was not terribly impressive. A simple structure- 144 ft. in width, it had four log bastions. The size of the fort is deceiving, however, for Fort Ste. Anne was the staging area for several military expeditions against the British and the Mohawks. In September 1666, some 600 veteran troops of the Carignan-Salieres regt., together with an equal number of volunteers, (or habitans ) met here with approximately 100 Huron warriors, preparing to march against the Mohawk villages on the river named for them. Some three hundred bateaux and bark canoes set off from the Western shore of the island for this expedition. Isle La Motte is the site of the world-famous Isle La Motte Reef. Here are found some of the most ancient fossils in the world. Isle La Motte's Fisk Quarry provided stone for many local buildings, including Fort Montgomery and Isle aux Noix's Fort Lennox on the Richelieu River.

North Hero, Vermont

Certainly a unique name for a town, North Hero was part of a land grant on October 27, 1779, by the Republic of Vermont to Ethan Allen and "associates". This parcel of land was named "Two Heroes" in honor of Ethan Allen and his brother Ira. In 1788 the "Two Heroes" were divided into two separate Townships known as "North Hero" and "South Hero". This changed yet again in 1798 when "South Hero" was split into two with the addition of a "Middle Hero".

The British maintained a blockhouse here at what is now known as Blockhouse Point. They referred to it as Dutchman's Point. The blockhouse guarded the entrance to "Carry Bay," so-called because it led to a very narrow tip of land referred to as the carrying place. It was utilized by natives and other lake travelers as an important portage or shortcut across the islands. A truly fascinating note about this blockhouse is that the British refused to abandon it after the Colonies attained independence and became the United States in 1783. Not until the signing of Jay's Treaty in 1794 did the Crown feel compelled to part with this property.

It was to be many years later before the Canadians would feel "comfortable" with their neighbors to the South. After all, the USA did invade Canada on two occasions!

Grand Isle, Vermont

Known as "Middle Hero" until 1810 , Grand Isle (the town) came into existence on November 7, 1798 when the Township of South Hero was divided in two. Situated as it is in the center of the lake, directly opposite Cumberland Head, residents of the town have watched some dramatic events take place from her shores.

Grand Isle is the home of the Hyde Log Cabin, an original structure built circa 1783, by one of the islands pioneer settlers, Capt. Jedediah Hyde. A fascinating building to see, this cabin is one of the oldest in the United States. It consists of one large room- 20'x25', with an overhead loft and a huge fireplace at one end 2. British Lt. John Enys, in his American Journals, spent the night in this house during his return visit to the fledgling United States in 1787-1788. He writes "we saw up in a small Bay just after we had passed the small Island that lies opposite to Valcore. Here we found an excellent harbour and a small house belonging to one Captain [Jedediah?] Hyde who[s]e wife received us very civily he being absent. This place was so very small that there was hardly Room for us all to sleep upon the floor." The cabin served as a home to members of the Hyde family for nearly 150 years.

Abby Maria Hemingway, in her Vermont Historical Gazetteer, tells us of the early settlement of Grand Isle (the island):

"From the commencement of settlement to 1785, the following named persons came, the most of them had families who accompanied them, viz; Cyril Reed, William Hyde, Jonathan Griffith, Uzziel Clark, Wm. Campbell, Jacob Vantyne, John Minckler, John Sawyer, Reuben Clapp, John Gibson, and Ephraim Sawyer, Jr. These persons all settled within the limits of this town. However, the settlement made very little progress for some years, or not until about 1787. The forests, which were dense, and mainly composed of the hard varieties of timber, yielded slow submission to the attacks of the settlers, and were to some extent infested with wild animals; while bilious and intermittent fevers prevailed in a dangerous degree, and proved fatal to many of the early inhabitants. The first settlements were all made on the borders of the lake; and very little progress was made, for some years, in settling the interior portions of the town. The principal means of communication which the inhabitants had with each other, was furnished by canoes, or "dug outs", and by ice in winter; though a road was cut, within a year or two after the settlement was commenced, from Lamberton Allen's house, in this town [Grand Isle], to Col. Ebenezer Allen's house, in South Hero, which was wide enough to admit the passage of a pair of oxen."

In addition to having great armies with hundreds of boats pass on their way to war, the town has been the home of an important ferry crossing at Gordon's Landing since 1796. Standing upon the western shore on September 11, 1814 an onlooker would have had a dramatic view of the Battle of Plattsburg Bay.

South Hero, Vermont

*"...the view over sparkling Champlain water to the carved grandeur of the Adirondacks is an awe-inspiring one. Wall on wall the mountain barriers are massed high against the western skyline, shutting in the gleaming stretch of the inland sea that Champlain discovered for the Old World, but which long before that time knew that glide of birch canoes and the thrust of Indian paddles...." so reads a passage from a 1937 guidebook describing the view west from South Hero.

For in addition to its striking natural beauty, this southernmost of the Grand Isles is also rich in history. Long home to native peoples, in 1775 a scouting party brought news that "there is a body of Indians now lying on the west side of Lake Champlain... by the best information not less than four or five hundred." This was likely a large Abenaki village located at the Southern end of the township. A band of Abenaki is noted in the town census as living here as late as 1870, where they listed their occupation as " basket makers." A lovely, intact Iroquoian pot was recovered from the waters of Keeler Bay in 1986.

Ethan Allen spent his last night on earth in South Hero. In the tavern of his distant cousin, Ebenezer Allen (a figure of note in his own right) located at the very southernmost tip of the island, the storied hero of the revolution whiled away the evening of February 11, 1789. Legend has it his last night was spent reminiscing with a group of former Green Mt. Boys. It was on the trip home that Ethan Allen died, crossing the frozen lake on his hay wagon.

Crab Island, New York State

The small, densely forested island just to the north of Valcour was the home to a small American battery of two guns and more importantly, a large hospital. Before the battle some 700 of Macomb's troops had been sent here, mostly sick with typhus and dysentery. On September 10, 1814, another 40 men, casualties of the land skirmishes at Culver Hill and Halsey's corners, arrived.

Finally, on the morning of the naval battle, 400 of the sick and injured were moved to Burlington. The physicians and hospital tents remained however, for the suffering and death was to continue on Crab Island. It was here, on the Northern end of the island, that the dead were buried. The dead, British and American, 148 in all, were buried together in long trenches. There is a simple monument at the island commemorating those who suffered and died there.

Valcour Island, New York State

This beautiful island, much larger than Crab Island, is located just south of Plattsburgh Bay. The natural beauty and peace that one enjoys there today belie the fact that here was the scene of a desperate and pivotal struggle on October 11, 1776. Here on that early Fall day the tiny American navy under Benedict Arnold waited in the bay for the mighty British fleet. Only a tiny monument on the shore stands to tell the tale of the dramatic engagement fought here.

Providence Island, Stave Island & Carleton's Prize, Vermont

Just 5 years after the end of the War of 1812 tragedy again struck the Champlain Islands. On the evening of September 4, 1819 the new Steamer Phoenix, left Burlington for Canada. Aboard were 46 passengers and crew. In the middle of the night, just off Providence Island, it was discovered the vessel was on fire. Most of the passengers made their way to the island in lifeboats, but six lives were lost in the blaze of the ship. Despite a very short life, the Phoenix had carried President James Monroe aboard her decks and had transported the mortal remains of Revolutionary war hero Richard Montgomery to their final resting place. The wreck of the Phoenix remains today a popular diving site as it has been designated an Underwater Historic Preserve by the State of Vermont.

Carleton's Prize is a solitary chunk of rock that rises from the lake about three miles east of Valcour, just off Providence Island and what is now known as White's Beach in South Hero. Supposedly it received its name after being mistakenly bombarded by the British fleet in search of Benedict Arnold's vessels in 1776. One wonders how Sir Guy Carleton would have felt had he known of the "prize" named for him! The Abenaki knew this tiny island as odzihózoiskw´ or "Odzihozo's wife". Odzihozo himself, the Transformer, "resides" in Burlington Bay, some distance from his "wife". "*
